A note from ESQ subscriber Scott Kennedy

Hi David,

I was so happy to receive the collector orange vinyl edition of The Beach Boys with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the ESQ giveaway last month. I am an avid fan of all things Beach Boys and have been an ESQ reader for the past several years and as I posted on your fabulously updated site, ‘it is a great time to be a Beach Boys fan’. There is always something new to discover and I appreciate the care and expertise put into each issue of ESQ.

The recent tributes to Nick Walusko have been enlightening and heart-warming. Over the years I have been fortunate enough to have met nearly all members of Brian’s band, and I’ll treasure the few moments I spent chatting with Nick, he always made me feel like I was a familiar friend. I first discovered the Beach Boys when I was around 10 years old and my dad bought the 10 Great Songs CD (probably off a carwash carousel or the like) for our family vacation in Montauk (a beach town on the eastern tip of Long Island, NY). I spent the whole summer listening over and over again … I fell in love with their Christmas album that holiday season and then on Christmas morning I opened a gift from my grandmother: Smiley Smile. Now this was a turning point for any listener, and I encountered it early … and it hit like a ton of bricks! I was in. I spent the next several formative years buying the 90s twofers from Columbia House Record Club and any other material I could get my hands on.

A few years later I formed a band with my brother, cousins, and a friend called the D-Fenders and we rocked and rolled the beaches of eastern Long Island all summer long for the next decade-plus. If the mood was right, we would open our second set with an a capella “well, you’re well, you’re welcome …” transitioning into “Heroes and Villains.” I currently rock my living room with my two beautiful daughters and my musically talented wife. A lot of Beach Boys at our house.

Anyway, thanks again for the wonderful content and for sharing your passion with us super-fans. Keep it coming!

Sincerely,
Scott Kennedy
