REVIEW: Unwrap Christian Love’s “Candy” for A Sweet Blend of Alt Rock Pop

By Amanda May Metzger

If it’s possible to get a sugar rush from a song, Christian Love’s new single “Candy” delivers — just in time for Valentine’s Day.

This track is sweet and irresistibly sticky, the kind that stays with you long after listening. Don’t be surprised if you catch yourself humming it every time you walk by the candy aisle.

Opening with high-energy drums and bold guitar riffs, Candy channels the best of ’90s alternative rock. Christian’s smooth, sweet vocals have a chill vibe that’s somehow both laid-back and energizing, making this a song you’ll want to hear live for the full effect.

Lyrically, it captures the sweet rush of new love:

“You and me are forever like the deep blue sea … It’s like candy, baby, it’s like sugar, girl.”

The infectious energy will have you moving, while the standout bass and guitar solos add extra layers.

Candy follows the release of Christian’s debut album Only Alibis, a captivating mix of indie, rock and pop exploring themes of relationships, fulfillment, and pure fun. A fun fact: Christian co-wrote “Here We Go Again” with Bruce Johnston and other songwriters, which appeared on The Weeknd’s Dawn FM.

As the son of The Beach Boys founding member Mike Love, Christian proves he’s carving his own musical path.

This fizzy pop-rock gem is perfect for dance parties or cruising in a convertible with the top down. If I were directing a rom-com about rival candy companies merging (Hallmark-style), this would be the song for the montage where the lead characters fall in love.

Ultimately, “Candy” is just plain fun. Unwrap this song for something that seems like a simple treat but reveals layers of expert instrumentation, strong vocals, and irresistible charm when you take a bite.
