Hi, I’ve been an ESQ subscriber for 3 or 4 years or so. “A Postcard from California” brings back a lot of memories for me. Al had song samples posted to his website for quite a while before the album came out and I remember listening to them in the computer lab in high school in around 2009. “Now you know I’m goin’ out west…” would auto-play when you went to aljardine.com. When the album finally came out, I remember buying the MP3 version on Amazon and loving it. It was my first venture into a Beach Boy’s solo catalog. Oh how much deeper I’ve gone since then…

I’ve been a subscriber for 2-3 years. I love A Postcard from California. The highlights for me are “California Feelin” and “And I Always Will”. Al put in a lot on these recordings and it gives the record a genuine feel.

I have been a subscriber for only about 6 months or so, but I absolutely love it and wish I had been long before this. As for Al’s album, I think it is absolutely fantastic, it stands up with some of the Beach Boys’ best albums. It has had a solid spot on my summer playlists ever since it came out.

I became a subscriber a few years ago, then let my sub run out – but I couldn’t take being without ESQ! Renewed a year ago and will continue to renew as long as I live, I get excited every time I see the envelope in my mailbox, and I’m never disappointed! A Postcard From California spotlights the great singing, playing and writing talents of one of my fave Beach Boys – a dream come true for us Al fans, it showed us that Al hadn’t lost a trick over the years, as if there could be any doubt. A super album, in every way.

I’ve been subscribed since 2017, and recently won something so I’m just commenting for pleasure! I think Al’s “A Postcard from California” is among the greatest of Beach Boy solo efforts. It combines great collaboration with fellow bandmates, family, and various artists and songwriters, and beautifully varies between up-beat rockers and chill ballads. The recording and production is also stellar, handled at Al’s fabulous “Red Barn”. My only complaint–“Waves of Love” should have been an official part of the tracklist!!! What a great tune and what an amazing album! 🙂

I am now in my second year as a subscriber of Endless Summer Quarterly.
This album is not an earthshattering one but a solid, well-produced song cycle with a slightly nostalgic touch. Alan Jardine takes us on a trip to California. And he is not alone but accompanied by his sons and guests like Brian Wilson, David Marks, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Neil Young as well as Flea, Steve Miller, or Glen Campbell. The songs are relaxed and saturated with harmonies. Most of them are known to Beach Boys fans like “Help Me Rhonda”, “Honkin` Down The Highway” or “California Saga”. But the new recordings of the classics sound fresh and not like simple cover songs due to the excellent arrangements and the input of the guest stars. Last but not least Alan Jardine and his fellow Beach Boys finished an old track written by Alan. So “Don´t Fight The Sea” is an unofficial Beach Boys song and sounds just great. My favorite song on the album is the title song “A Postcard From California”. It is semiautobiographical and takes us back to a time when Alan’s family moved to California to start a new and better life. To sum it up, this album seems to be a real labour of love for Alan Jardine. If only he would release a follow-up!

Hi I have been a subscriber for two years now.

I love all things Beach Boys, of course, as we all do, but have always felt that Al has been the unsung hero of the band. A great vocalist and rhythm guitarist. I love the songs that Al takes lead on, some of which are right up there with my all time favourite Beach Boys tracks, including Rhonda, Cottonfields, Then I Kissed Her and Lady Lynda.

I also love seeing Al on stage with Brian Wilson, and it is clear to see the love and respect he has for the great man when they are on stage together.

When Postcards was released I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it, and I wasn’t disappointed at all. What a great album.

I’ve always loved the California Saga on Holland so great to see ‘California’ reproduced on here. My other real favourites are California Feelin’ and California Dreaming with the great Glenn Campbell, Don’t Fight The Sea, Drivin’ and of course Honking Down The Highway!!

Long may you continue to support Brian Wilson Mr Jardine and here’s hoping you are able to grace the UK shores in 2021.

I’ve been a subscriber for … well, I don’t know how long. It’s been on and off over the years as finances have permitted, but my collection includes a few from the early days when the covers were in black and white on matte card stock! Al has always intrigued me as the apparent square peg in a round hole whose folk roots have added subtle, almost indefinable colour to the group’s sound, both instrumentally and vocally. I’ve never had the chance to hear A Postcard all the way through, as I’m a firm believer in rewarding an artist for their efforts by purchasing the physical entity they have so lovingly created. Maybe I’ll get the chance soon!

I’ve been a subscriber for several years. Before that, I used to “piggyback” on my friend Bob Hanes’s subscription. I’d read his copies. Spent many a happy hour in his den reading ESQ and listening to Beach Boys rarities.

I think he has gotten his due in recent years, but for decades I used to think that Al was the underappreciated Beach Boy. It seemed that all the praise was heaped on the Wilson brothers. I thoroughly enjoyed Al’s live Family & Friends CD, but with Postcard he knocked one squarely over the center field fence. It’s one of my personal favorites, by anybody.

I interviewed Al shortly after his “divorce” from Mike. He came across as thoughtful, generous, and articulate – a nice man.

Of all the solo albums by the members of The Beach Boys, ‘A Postcard From California’ is definitely one of my favorites. I got the CD eight years ago and heard a lot that I liked. The relaxed, unhurried atmosphere of the album reminded me strongly of the ‘Friends’ and ‘Holland’ LPs. Unlike Brian’s and Mike’s voices, Al’s voice still sounded exactly like it did during the heydays of The Beach Boys. I loved that ‘Looking Down The Coast’, my favorite Beach Boys rarity, finally saw the official light of day. And the contributions by Glen Campbell, Neil Young, Steve Miller, America, Flea and Brian Wilson, among others, proved that the “least famous original Beach Boy” does in fact also matter to many of his prominent colleagues.
(Unfortionately not a subscriber, I would like to be, but I live in Europa and am currently unemployed, so the costs are a bit too high for me right now.)

I consider “Postcards From California” almost a long lost Beach Boys album. Every song is superb, and Al shines vocally throughout. One of the very best BB solo projects ever. (I have been as ESQ subscriber for more than a decade.)

I love this LP. There’s always a country or folk feeling in Alan’s songs. And this is the case in this Album. I bought the Amazon cd first, and then the 2nd cd edition. I think all the guest stars are a good idea. This is good music, by a great singer

When I first heard about Postcard From California a decade ago I was so excited, because I’ve always loved Al’s creativity and the incredible beauty of his voice. Then I saw the guest list. So many artists that would be a perfect fit for Al’s sound. I couldn’t wait to download it, and was taken on this amazing journey, sonic and imaginative. To Australians that Northern California coastline seems so full of beauty, mystery and allure, but also seems somehow familiar. Postcard from California took me there, and that ability to take us on a magical mystery tour to his home has become so I portent again this year as we have all been locked down. That’s the album’s ongoing gift and magic, allowing us to travel through our ears and minds. A decade of sheer joy. I keep trying to work out how long I’ve been a subscriber, and I think it’s been at least five years of excitement waiting for that white envelope to arrive.
