For the development of this Mike Love special collector’s edition of Endless Summer Quarterly [ESQ] magazine, I requested the layers of art that were used on the packaging for Mike’s recently released 12 Sides Of Summer album.
The album, designed by Jacquelyne Love and Patrick Wilson, features a background photo taken by Mike and Jacquelyne’s son Brian Love.
Acquiring Brian’s photo allowed me to create the wraparound cover, using the ocean and sunset panoramic as the backdrop.
During the early development of the collectible cover, I was working with a really flattering photo of Mike, but (no matter what I did visually) it didn’t possess the vibe I was shooting for: movement … something that matched Mike’s recording and performing energy.
I wanted an image that presented the idea of movement. For me, that was the key component of my personal view of Mike and his impressive progression as a recording artist in the last three years.
Fortunately, I had a choice selection of performance photos taken on Thursday, July 25, 2019, in Asheville, NC, at Biltmore House. The photos, taken by photographer extraordinaire Daniel Coston, captured the essence of the summer vibe, and married perfectly with Brian Love’s oceanic setting.
